North American leader in the glass processing market, Unical is the only company in Quebec able to process large volumes of clean glass and the only company in North America able to process mixed broken glass (glass collected from the blue box collection program).

The mixed glass is turned into glass cullet (glass crushed to the consistency of a grain of sand), to supply raw materials for the fibreglass insulation manufacturing industry. The clean glass (amber or flint glass) is processed into glass cullet (glass pieces) to supply raw materials for the glass container manufacturing industry.

Cliquez pour agrandir - Click to view. 1992 : As subsidiary of the largest material recycling facility in Quebec, Unical was founded as a solution to the recovered glass problem. Then operating the first major material recycling facility of collected materials from the blue box collection program in Quebec, this facility generated a significant amount of contaminated glass (with metal, plastic, and other materials that aren’t glass) without a sustainable market for it. Unical accordingly developed a unique processing method, which involves the cleaning of the glass in order to remove the contaminants mentioned above and to turn the glass into cullet (glass crushed to the consistency of a grain of sand) to supply raw materials for the fibreglass insulation manufacturing industry. Unical now processes the great majority of the glass from the blue box collection program in Quebec, a portion of the glass from the blue box collection program from Ontario, and some from the United States.
